Me as a Youth Ambassador at Singapore Zoo

I was deeply drawn to the opportunity of becoming a Youth Ambassador at the Mandai Singapore Zoo—not only for the chance to educate visitors about the habitats and behaviors of different animals, but more importantly, to share the zoo’s vision of a world where animals can live naturally and coexist harmoniously with humans. What inspires me most about Mandai is its belief that true conservation begins with education and empathy. Many of Mandai’s residents are rescued animals, and the team has designed unique enrichment programs that recreate natural conditions for each species to thrive. This is why I applied as the first youth conservation ambassador at Mandai Zoo from my highschool.

At the beginning of my volunteer journey, I focused mainly on informing Mandai’s mission and listing the enrichment measures taken to improve animal welfare. I spoke about diet plans, habitats, and behavioral training to the guests. However, in one afternoon, after I had finished describing the zoo’s welfare facilities, a guest asked me, “Do animals really feel emotions like we do?” That simple question stopped me. It made me realize that conservation doesn’t begin with scientific explanations or technical terms, it begins with compassion.

From that moment, my approach transformed. I began to share the personal stories of the animals instead of just facts: the story of Jubilee the giraffe, rescued from a malnourished zoo, and Simba the lion, whose genes are part of a delicate conservation effort to protect endangered species. I saw visitors’ expressions soften as they listened. Through storytelling, I let myself became the voices of the animals. I learned that authentic, heartfelt communication, rather than data alone is what truly bridges the understanding between humans and animals. At Mandai, I discovered that the essence of conservation is not only to protect, but to connect.

Me as a fencer

Fencing has taught me focus which sharpens both mind and body and the humility to accept defeat as part of growth. More importantly, through constant failure and countless retries, it has instilled in me true perseverance: the determination to keep pushing forward, to rise after every setback, and to turn each loss into quiet strength. Above all, it has shaped my adaptability, sportsmanship, and the resolve to never stop improving, no matter how many times I fall.

Over the past eight years of fencing, this has been the project I’ve committed to the longest and it has shaped not only my athletic ability but moreover, my character. Through countless training sessions and competitions, The countless minutes on the metal grey piste learned how to face setbacks with resilience and composure, to adjust quickly under pressure, and to stay disciplined even though the progress felt invisible.

Me as a film screenwriter

With my interest sparked by scriptwriting in theatre class, I co-authored the screenplay for an original film currently in pre-production.

PDF of the Screenplay

Synopsis

The screenplay “YISHU 一书” documents the life of the protagonist, Yishu, a girl from a small town in Hunan who dreams of breaking free from her environment through education. From humble beginnings and social ridicule, she fights against systemic inequality and family opposition, pushing herself to excel and study abroad. The story traces her transformation from a silenced, overlooked student into an empowered young woman leading feminist and social activism, organizing anti-taboo and gender-equality movements, and striving to reshape the rules of her own world. Ultimately, Yishu becomes a symbol of resilience and self-liberation, inspiring girls not to be confined by the “limitations” in their minds and to chase their dreams fearlessly.

Me as an assistant director of musicals

I participated in the school musical Legally Blonde as one of three Assistant Directors, directly supporting the lead director throughout the entire production process. I was responsible for coordinating with over 180 cast members, guiding them on how to effectively deliver their characters’ emotions and stage presence. One thing that I'm very passionate about participating in musical productions is because it gatherers a super diverse group of people, such as teachers, technical staff, lighting and stage crews, people from my same age, and students from primary school levels. I had to adapt my communication style constantly. I learned how to express my ideas clearly and appropriately to different groups, ensuring that my intentions were understood both expressively and effectively.

Over four months of rehearsals, this experience demanded consistent collaboration, problem-solving, and empathy. The large-scale, school-wide production, eventually performed for an audience of over 600 people, offered me an in-depth understanding of how every role, no matter how big or small, is vital to the success of a performance. Through this process, I not only deepened my passion for theatre but also developed strong communication and coordination skills, as well as a deep appreciation for the precision, teamwork, and attention to detail required to bring a production to life.
